You would have been more forthcoming about your status that way?

Probably! After all, I can see how this doesn't look great at the moment.

What do you mean?

I never said I was a warden. But I might have done a few things to give people that impression?

[ You can't nervous laugh your way out of this one, Nana! But she sure as hell is trying. ]

For what reason?

[ Because she has to be competent and on top of things and in control otherwise she'll explode ]

I'm only sixteen, you know. People are going to look at me differently here no matter what. I'd at least like them to get to know me as a person before getting to know me as a hardened criminal in need of reformation.

[ Based on her tone of voice, Nana doesn't really believe she's a hardened criminal - she's joking a bit. ]

You're not a hardened criminal. [He doesn't need a file to know that. He's been around too many.]

Do you think people are going to see you differently now?

Well you obviously are. Aren't you?

[heyboss]

No. I don't see you differently as an inmate. I see you differently because you tried to manipulate me.

[reviewstarlight]

Mmm, I wouldn't call it manipulation. More like...letting you come to your own conclusion?

It's not my fault people assumed I was a warden.

[heyboss]

[Sheehan doesn't hesitate.]

Yes it is, Nana. You told me just moments ago that you did things to give people the impression that you were a warden.

But that's not lying. Lying is an active choice, right? It's not active if other people make that decision.

Besides, everybody does things to give people a different, better impression. Or at least, an impression that something is different than what it truly is.

[heyboss]

It was an active choice to attempt nudge people in the direction you were choosing. You knowingly made choices that you hoped would influence them in a certain direction.

[reviewstarlight]

[ All as they talk, Nana gives Sheehan a bright, easy going smile. She's not going to let this guy crack her facade or ruin her mood. She's worked too hard for that. ]

Doesn't everybody do that? Everybody makes choices to have others think about them a certain way. You don't tell people your embarrassing secrets when you first meet.

[heyboss]

Perhaps not. But nor do I tell them stories deliberately pointed into making me seem like I am a lawyer. Do you see the difference?

I do. But there's one more thing you're overlooking. You could have always asked.

Everything we talked about in the library was true. I wouldn't have lied about being an inmate if someone asked me directly. I'm not that sort of girl!

[heyboss]

I could have, you're right.

But I'll let you off the hook for now. I don't want you to think I'm upset about it. I'm not. At all.

And I don't want us getting off on the wrong foot. So - I apologize if I came across strong. I was a little hurt by it, I think.

But - while I have you here, is there anything I can do for you? I keep getting new inmates, so not everyone knows what to ask for.

Actually... there is one thing I've been thinking about. People here have all sorts of pets, right? And there's the vets office where they can take care of them. I've never had a pet before, but if I'm going to be here for a while, I might as well do something that makes me happy. And I have a lot more free time lately, plenty of time to take care of a pet.

[heyboss]

Sure. Pets certainly seem to help a lot of people here. What are you wanting?

A frog! I can make a list of all the equipment I'll need to take care of him. And I promise to have a back-up person to look after him if I'm in a coma.

[heyboss]

Sounds like you've got it all figured out. Send me the list and I'll make the request.

[reviewstarlight]

Of course!

[ And then like one minute later, Sheehan gets a VERY DETAILED list of stuff needed for the care and keeping of frogs. ]

[heyboss]
